A hinged elbow brace is used when a gradual increase in elbow range of motion is required. It consists of a forearm and upper shell with a joint in between. This joint can be set in various positions depending on the stage of rehabilitation.

A humeral fracture orthosis is made from a thin plastic material. It wraps around the humerus and cups the shoulder joint. It is tightly positioned around the humerus using Velcro straps and also has another strap that wraps under the opposite arm pit to hold the shoulder section close to the body. This may be worn with a collar and cuff.

An arm sling is commonly used in the acute phase after an upper limb injury. An arm sling has a material section with multiple adjustable veclro straps. The straps can be adjusted to ensure the elbow and wrist are in the correct position.

Wrist Hand Orthoses can either be made from a low temperature plastic or a high temperature plastic. A low temperature plastic WHO can be moulded directly onto the skin and finished on site using Velcro straps. A high temperature plastic is a stronger material which requires moulding over a plaster cast. If a high temperature WHO is required, a plaster cast must be taken and the orthosis fabricated overnight.

The WHO can be fabricated to just immobilise the wrist or both the wrist and thumb. These are commonly used to treat wrist fractures, scaphoid fractures or midshaft radius/ulna fractures.

At Orthotics Plus we also use pre-fabricated WHO if there is a simple ligamentous injury which doesn’t require complete contouring to the shape of the limb.
