Osteoarthritis is a “wear and tear” type pathology affecting the articular cartilage of joints. We commonly see this in joints of the wrist and thumb.

Symptoms can include pain, stiffness and swelling. Movement of an arthritic joint increases pain levels. The aim of orthotic management is to reduce movement of the joint using a custom made or prefabricated Wrist Hand Orthosis (WHO) which immobilises all wrist and/or thumb movements.

Carpal Tunnel syndrome is a painful disorder caused by pressure on the median nerve which runs through the carpal tunnel of the wrist area.

Symptoms can include numbness, pins and needles and pain (particularly at night). Repetitive hand movements (i.e. digging, sweeping, working at a checkout), pregnancy and arthritis of the wrist can be the cause of carpal tunnel.

Conservative management may include a custom made or pre-fabricated Wrist Hand Orthosis (WHO) which immobilises all wrist movement, whilst allowing free finger and thumb range of motion.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is a painful condition affecting the ligaments along the thumb side of the wrist (Abductor Pollicis Longus and Extensor Pollicis Longus).

Symptoms can include pain and swelling near the base of the thumb and difficulty moving and gripping whilst using your thumb and wrist. Since this is an overuse injury, repeated movements of the wrist and thumb will worsen the symptoms.

The best conservative treatment option is a Custom Made Wrist Hand Orthosis (WHO) to immobilise all wrist and thumb movements. This will reduce movement and pain levels.
