Prefabricated Orthotic Services

Orthotics Plus provides prefabricated Orthotics options to our patients in Melbourne.

For paediatrics, prefabricated Orthotics are often recommended to manage pain from conditions in the foot/ankle. In some instances, custom-made Orthotics would be preferred, but prefabricated Orthotics may be sufficient.

For adults, prefabricated Orthotics may be an option depending on financial preferences and the individual’s condition. However, our patients tend to prefer custom-made Orthotics, as they are tailored to the patient’s anatomy and address their specific concerns.

When visiting Orthotics Plus for a foot assessment, you are given choice and control, the ideal outcome is that you leave with Orthotics that address your symptoms.

Difference Between Custom and Prefabricated Orthotics

Custom Orthotics are shaped specifically for the patient’s foot, whereas prefabricated options are available in standardised shoe sizes. Prefabricated Orthotics can still be ground and are customisable to a degree.

In customising an Orthotic, we’re able to use different materials in the composition of the Orthotic. For example, for people who might benefit from a soft spot in a certain area, this could be manufactured using variable density Ethyl Vinyl Acetate.

We stock one high-quality prefabricated Orthotic brand, which is similar to the materials used in our custom-made Orthotics.

Both types are compatible with additional shoe modifications, such as carbon fibre stiffening.

Choosing the Correct Orthotics

Our Orthotists consider several factors in recommending the right Orthotic, including

  • Patient anatomy, size and weight
  • Symptoms present
  • Pressure distribution, gait pattern
  • Lifestyle, footwear, work type, etc

For example, a patient with a bony foot and lower amounts of fat padding would typically require a softer Orthotic. If the patient has a flatter foot, we may ensure a larger arch so they deliver a supportive structure.

For rigid feet, we may consider softer materials to compensate for the lack of shock absorption in the foot. For a larger individual who’s very active, a harder material could be used because it’s going to be durable whilst still delivering pain management.

Each foot Orthotic prescription needs to be carefully selected and fitted for the individual.
