Understanding Flat Feet

Flat feet, scientifically known as Pes planus or pes planovalgus, is an anatomical variation where individuals lack a significant medial longitudinal arch and their ankles and heels roll inwards

The medial longitudinal arch is one of the three arches that form the structure of the human foot. It runs along the inside or medial aspect of the foot, extending from the heel to the ball of the foot.

This arch is composed of the calcaneus (heel bone), talus, navicular, cuneiforms, and the first three metatarsal bones.

The medial longitudinal arch plays a crucial role in supporting the foot and absorbing shock during activities like walking and running. It helps distribute the body’s weight across the foot and contributes to the overall stability of the foot and ankle.

During the phase of walking where the foot pushes off the ground- the arch will generally become increased and the foot more rigid which gives a more effective push off. People with flat feet may find that they have more mobility through the midfoot and a less effective toe off motion.

Individuals with a well-formed medial longitudinal arch typically have what is considered a “normal” arch structure. However, conditions like flat feet involve a reduction or collapse of this arch, leading to a different foot structure. Custom insoles are often used to support the medial longitudinal arch and address issues related to flat feet.

This condition can be genetic or arise from neuromuscular issues, weak muscles, or tibialis posterior tendon lengthening. While most often inconsequential, flat feet can lead to problems such as lateral ankle pain, plantar fasciitis, knee pain and shin splints especially later in life.

How Custom Insoles for Flat Feet Work

Our custom insoles are designed to reduce overpronation, support the arch, alleviate ankle and plantar fascia stress, reduce internal tibial rotation and enhance lower limb alignment.

This is achieved through custom foot orthotics, which are tailored to your unique foot structure and biomechanics.

Step 1 – Insoles Customised to Your Flat Feet

When you visit Orthotics Plus, we conduct a thorough assessment, including observing you walk, range of motion, and strength testing.

With your input and understanding of your symptoms, we create a cast or impression of your feet.

This cast is modified to establish a medial longitudinal arch, and custom EVA insoles are manufactured to provide optimal support.

The exact positioning of the arch support is determined based on your individual presentation.

Through a combination of capturing the natural position of your foot and utilising our CAD system, we ensure that your custom insoles are tailored to achieve optimal biomechanical correction.

Step 2 – Refinement of Material

Our insoles are made from EVA material, offering excellent shock absorption and comfort properties.

This material doesn’t have sharp plastic edges like commonly prescribed cheaper foot orthotics.

Our custom EVA insoles also allow the muscle of the foot to move more naturally whilst still providing the arch support the foot needs to function.

Step 3 – Customisation for Different Purposes

Whether you’re a runner, someone who stands all day, or have unique lifestyle habits, we tailor the construction of the insoles to suit your needs.

This may involve selecting different density EVA or incorporating specific features to address your activity level and foot condition.

Step 4 – Expected Outcomes

Immediate pain relief is often experienced as custom insoles offload stressed tissues.

Over a few months, you can expect a gradual improvement in symptoms, providing you with the comfort and support you need.

We are here to support you with any adjustments or follow up questions.

FAQ

Our custom insoles can be used in various types of shoes, including athletic shoes, casual shoes, most dress shoes and boots, work boots, and casual footwear.

Orthotics are not compatible with shoes such as ballet flats, high heels, thongs and so forth.

For children, we generally wait until around age six or seven before considering foot orthotics unless there is an associated disability or pain.

Yes.

In the elderly, foot orthotics become valuable as healing slows down, fat pads thin out and biomechanical issues become more pronounced. Reducing biomechanical issues will often decrease pain and improve function allowing for a more active lifestyle.
