CTi Brace

Orthotics Plus provides professional knee assessments and prescriptions.

We stock a quality brace from the manufacturer Össur referred to as the CTi Knee Brace. It is available at all of our clinics for fitting and purchase.

In our clinical opinion it is the best knee brace for high impact sports.

We also have experience using this brace to help those with knee instability in everyday life and not participating in extreme sports.

Sports and Lifestyle the CTi Brace is Appropriate For

CTi braces were originally developed as motocross braces. Today, they are used by athletes participating in a number of sports including motocross, wakeboarding, surfing, skiing, and snowboarding to protect their knees from injury or re-injury.

Due to their strength, comfort and intimacy of the fit, they are also appropriate for non-extreme sports and for use in everyday life for patients with knee instability. They are useful for any activity where people want to minimise the risk of direct impacts/deforming forces going through the knee.

How the CTi Knee Braces Work

CTi braces effectively work by acting like rigid, solid frames around the knee that allow it to bend in the normal plane while also preventing it from bending in other directions. This will protect the ligaments and the soft tissues.

They allow for some rotational control of the knee and provide a barrier against blunt force trauma, such as a motorbike accident or a fall to the ground.

There is an optional patella cap that can be installed to minimise injury from forces to the knee cap.

We highly suggest this accessory for those riding motorbikes and downhill mountain biking.

Should I Get a Prefabricated or Custom CTi Brace?

There are prefabricated, off-the-shelf versions of CTi braces available at Orthotics Plus.

However, for anyone wanting the most intimate fit and the most control a customised CTi knee brace may be more appropriate.

Off-the-shelf versions come with a two-year warranty.

Our custom CTi braces are sold with a lifetime warranty.

We are always happy to adjust the brace to ensure a proper fit if your leg shape changes. We can also refurbish the braces if they are starting to show cosmetic signs of wear and tear.

This will be discussed at your appointment.

Time to Receive the Brace After the Initial Appointment

If you select an off-the-shelf brace, you can walk out with it the same day and start wearing it immediately. This does require informing us of the reason for your appointment in advance so we can ensure we order the braces in for you.

Occasionally, if a prefabricated brace is not in stock, it can take 1-2 days for us to receive them.

If you opt for a custom-made brace, it will need to be appropriately manufactured following your appointment. After your measurements are taken, it can take approximately two weeks for it to arrive back in our clinic. We will contact you once it’s available for pick-up or post it to you (if a follow up is not needed).

Measuring for a Custom CTi Knee Brace

The appointment will take approximately 30minutes. We will take your height, weight and conduct a series of questions to determine your activity levels, prior injuries.

More importantly we will ask you to determine the colour, patterns and any accessories you want with the brace!

We will then mark up your leg, noting any bony prominences and areas to avoid, and take a series of measurements including the leg circumference, knee condyle width in various positions of knee flexion.

We will then take a series of photos from different planes to capture your leg angles. Sometimes we will also perform a 3D scan of your leg with a structure scanner if we deem it necessary.

The order is then sent digitally to Össur in America who manufacture the brace and post it back. The process takes 2-3 weeks in total. There is a guarantee on the fit of the brace.

Do I wear a CTi Knee Crace on One or Both Legs?

Nearly all patients who wear the CTis to prevent an injury wear them on both legs. Patients who have had a previous injury or currently have a weakness may just wear a brace on the knee of concern.
