Custom Foot Orthotics Under the NDIS

At Orthotics Plus, we provide high-quality custom foot orthotics for NDIS participants to help improve mobility, reduce pain, aid comfort and overall foot health.

This page will explore when and why the NDIS funds orthotics, as well as the application and assessment process.

The NDIS funds both custom and prefabricated foot orthotics. However, the choice between the two depends on the individual needs of the participant.

Benefits of Orthotics for NDIS Participants

Custom foot orthotics provide significant benefits for NDIS participants by addressing individual needs, overall mobility and comfort.

  • Better fit: Custom orthotics are tailored to the unique shape and biomechanics of the foot.
  • Long-term durability: High-quality materials and a more intimate fit ensure longevity, making them more cost-effective over time.
  • Targeted support – Custom orthotics are designed to address specific challenges such as foot pain, imbalance, or gait irregularities
  • Quality of life – By alleviating discomfort and promoting better posture and movement, custom orthotics promote more engagement in everyday life

Whether for everyday use, work, or recreational activities, custom foot orthotics are a relatively low-cost solution that supports the everyday needs

Who Refers NDIS Participants for Custom Orthotics?

Referrals can come from various healthcare professionals, including:

  • Physiotherapists – The most common source of referrals, as they regularly assess gait and foot biomechanics.
  • Occupational Therapists (OTs) – They may identify a need for orthotics during broader mobility assessments.
  • General Practitioners (GPs) or Podiatrists – They may refer patients experiencing chronic foot pain or postural issues.
  • Existing Orthotics Users – Participants who already have orthotics but require upgrades or wish to try a different provider.
  • Self referred – if you are a self managed NDIS participant, you are welcome to contact Orthotics Plus for assessment and advice.

Understanding NDIS Funding for Orthotics

To justify funding for custom foot orthotics, a clinical assessment is required. This typically includes:

  • Gait Analysis – Assessing how the participant walks and identifying any biomechanical abnormalities.
  • Range of Motion Testing – Evaluating foot and ankle flexibility and function.
  • Pain and Activity Discussion – Understanding the participant’s pain levels, daily activities, and overall mobility goals.
  • Footwear Assessment – Reviewing current footwear to determine compatibility or the need for specialised shoes to complement orthotic support.

The findings from the clinical assessment are compiled into a detailed report, outlining the participant’s needs and justifying the recommendation for custom foot orthotics, which is then submitted to the NDIS for funding approval.

Notes on Paediatric NDIS Participants

For children, the initial NDIS application includes a request for orthotics funding for the upcoming 12 months. It is also recommended to specify that orthotics will need annual replacements due to growth. In many cases, this allows funding to roll over into subsequent NDIS plans without requiring reapplication each year.

Custom foot orthotics typically fall under Low-Cost Assistive Technology (AT). However, if a participant’s funding is structured differently, they may also be claimed under the Consumables category.

At Orthotics Plus, we work closely with NDIS participants, their support coordinators, and healthcare providers to ensure a seamless process for obtaining and funding the right orthotic solution. Contact us today to discuss how we can support your mobility needs with custom foot orthotics.

Notes on Repairs and Modifications

Minor repairs such as Velcro replacements are covered by the NDIS, though in many cases, worn footwear may need full replacement. Shoe modifications, such as heel raises, lateral flares, and carbon fibre stiffeners, are funded as part of the initial application process.

The funding is covered under the below categories:

  • Consumables: If the footwear costs around $350, it often falls under consumables.
  • Low-Cost Assistive Technology (AT): If custom footwear exceeds $1,000, it typically falls under this category.

Our team advocates for choice and control, and we will give appropriate advice and support.

FAQs

Prefabricated orthotics are most commonly used for children.

Since children’s feet grow and change rapidly, prefabricated options allow for regular updates to accommodate growth. Typically, children need replacements annually to ensure continued support and effectiveness.

If the child has anatomy that doesn’t suit pre-fabricated foot orthotics or has specific requirements for custom made foot orthotics our advice will reflect this.

Yes, custom foot orthotics can be adjusted to ensure a proper fit and optimal support over time.

If the participant’s needs change or if minor discomfort arises, our orthotists can make adjustments to the orthotics.

Our Melbourne facilities have milling machines and workshops, the high quality foam material we use can be re-adjusted as needed.

In most cases, the NDIS can cover follow-up appointments related to orthotics under the participant’s support plan.

These appointments are important for monitoring the effectiveness of the orthotics and making any necessary adjustments, ensuring the participant continues to benefit from the best possible support.
