ROM Knee Bracing Services

A Range of Motion Knee Brace (ROM) is also known as a hinged knee brace or a postoperative range of motion brace.

ROM Brace is an umbrella term, meaning that there are many different versions of this brace on the market. Orthotics Plus stocks only high-quality ROM braces which will last the length of treatment, are easy to take on and off, and most importantly are comfortable for the patient and are TGA registered.

ROM braces are applied by our Orthotists to prevent certain ranges of motion at the knee, depending on what the surgeon, or we decide.

Limiting certain movements at the knee will allow your injury or surgery to heal while keeping you as functional as possible.

We have multple clinics in Melbourne. We are available for a same-day service for patients requiring a RoM knee brace, appointments are preferred.

Different Types of ROM Braces

here are many manufacturers offering their own version of a ROM brace, the variances may include:

  • Different lengths (i.e. shorter versus longer)
  • Dials to adjust allowed RoM
  • Ones without dials, that use blocks & stops to adjust the tension
  • Different customisations, trim lines, etc
  • Suspension mechanisms
  • Padding and cushioning

At Orthotics Plus we have tested the majority of the RoM knee braces on the market and only use orthotic devices we have determined to be the best.

What Conditions Require a ROM Brace?

As knee injuries/conditions can happen to anyone, there is a wide-range of patients that may require this service. This includes paediatrics and adults. The most common conditions requiring ROM bracing are:

  • Isolated ACL/MCL injuries
  • Combined ACL/MCL injuries
  • Patella fractures
  • Patella surgery
  • Tibial tuberosity fractures
  • Quadriceps tendon rupture/repair
  • Tibial plateau fractures

It should be noted that Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) injuries may be treated with traditional ROM braces however our current suggestion is to consider a specific PCL brace, such as the Rebound PCL which is also available at Orthotics Plus.

Postoperative Knee Support at Orthotics Plus

Orthotics Plus is experienced in taking part in multidisciplinary care for knee injuries, surgeries and ongoing support.

Typically, referrals are a result of ligament injuries or stable fractures. The patient will visit a surgeon, who may write a referral to visit Orthotics Plus, which usually takes place prior to surgery.

We will then fit the RoM knee as per the instructions from the surgeon and adjust the allowable RoM at the knee to match the prescription.

We will schedule review appointments with the patient to adjust the RoM through the course of treatment and ensure the device is comfortable and safe.

Please use our pre & post-operative page to learn more. We aim to provide a supportive environment with ease of access to our clinicians so you can focus on getting better!

Funding Knee Equipment from Orthotics Plus

In most cases, patients requiring a ROM brace have sustained an acute injury, so the most applicable funding scheme is private health insurance and then claiming a rebate.

We are also able to see patients under the WorkCover, DVA, TAC funding schemes and will take care of the funding applications when required.

Orthotics Plus is also registered with the NDIS & SWEP but these are often not applicable for an acute injury.

Please contact our office to confirm funding options and prices so you can make an informed decision.

Assessment & Fitting of a ROM Brace

Where a referral from a surgeon or doctor exists we will fit the RoM brace as per instruction and liaise with them accordingly. The brace may form part of the conservative management meaning no surgery is required.

If surgery is required, we will often fit the brace pre-operatively so the brace is ready to go and set up for immediate use after the operation.

We can also visit hospitals and fit the RoM brace to you after the procedure, this may incur a hospital visit fee.

In cases where a surgeon referral was not placed, Orthotics Plus will perform a comprehensive assessment and use our clinical experience to determine the best course of action.

When fitting the brace, your knee will generally be placed in a slightly bent position and fixed into a safe range of motion. The brace is applied directly to the skin. Our Orthotist will adjust any settings and possibly use a goniometer device to measure joint angles.

The assessment takes approximately 15-30 minutes. You will be provided with education and ongoing support.

ROM Brace FAQ

If your surgeon has already placed a referral with us, our administration team will contact you via your preferred means to book the consultation.

In other cases, your surgeon may have written you a referral on a note, you are welcome to place a referral using our online referral form, and attach any documents you may have.

Alternatively please call us to arrange an appointment and bring the written referral to the appointment.

You can always contact us if you have any questions.

We do not recommend this pathway.

We recommend sourcing the products with the assistance of a relevant medical professional.

This is because the fitting of the device requires both knowledge and precision and harm may occur if a medical device is misused or an injury is not managed correctly.

Generally speaking, no. The patient is fitted with one ROM brace which may be adjusted during the rehab period to allow more range of motion over time

In other cases, a patient may require a different brace for returning to sport, where a more functional brace is required.

This will depend, we (or your surgeon) will provide this information. A common timeframe is between 4-12 weeks.

Most often, the patient will be instructed to wear the brace at all times – except for showering.

If there is a need for a follow-up, this will be communicated to you during the initial consultation.

We are happy to educate patients and work with physios or your doctor to educate on simple adjustments such as dial adjustments. For any troubleshooting or review appointments, these can be conducted as required.

People are always welcome to contact Orthotics Plus for any reason.
