Our Services for Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of genetic disorders characterised by progressive weakening and degeneration of muscles.

This condition is primarily caused by mutations in genes that are essential for muscle structure and function.

Common Types of Muscular Dystrophy Include:

  • Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
  • Becker Muscular Dystrophy
  • Myotonic Dystrophy
  • Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy
  • Congenital Muscular Dystrophy

At Orthotics Plus, we provide Orthotic prescriptions to people living with MD to maximise their mobility.

How Orthotics Work for Muscular Dystrophy

The approach varies based on the specific presentation and progression.

Most patients seek assistance primarily for managing lower limb challenges. These patients exhibit symptoms such as foot drop, limited knee control, and notable weakness around the foot and ankle.

Addressing these concerns is necessary for stability, minimising the risk of falls, and improving overall mobility.

AFOs

The specific type of AFO will be prescribed to the patient based on a thorough assessment of the patient, their muscle strength and what movements they find difficult.

For example, a patient with general lower limb weakness and knee weakness could be suited to a GRAFO.

This type of AFO offers knee support for weakened quads, aids in preventing foot drop, and encourages a natural gait pattern. Its customisability and capacity for long-term adaptation make it effective in addressing the evolving challenges of muscular dystrophy.

A patient in earlier stages with only minor foot drop would benefit from a leafspring AFO or a hinged AFO. It’s all about aligning the individual prescription to the patient.

Custom Foot Orthotics

Custom foot orthotics offer significant advantages for individuals living with muscular dystrophy.

These specially crafted inserts provide personalised support that helps address challenges like arch collapse, balance issues, and walking abnormalities. By enhancing stability and promoting proper alignment, custom foot orthotics contribute to a more confident and comfortable walking experience.

Reviews & Holistic Care

Regarding patient monitoring and prescription updates, we typically conduct a series of fittings and evaluations during the initial three months. If comfort and improved stability are achieved, we advise patients to expect a reminder after 12 months.

This timeframe helps ensure timely reviews, but we’re also attentive to changes in their condition that might lead to an earlier assessment. While we proactively contact patients, we also rely on patients to reach us if there is a change of circumstances.

Our approach extends to education and holistic care. Many patients are already engaged in physiotherapy to maintain or enhance their strength—namely trunk control, glute, quad, calf work. Patients may also be working with an OT for services such as home modifications for fall prevention.

We like to ensure patients are receiving holistic care and will advise, communicate and refer to other healthcare providers as necessary.
