Orthotic Treatment of the Foot

Orthotics Plus deals with many foot conditions at our Melbourne clinics.

We help people to improve most biomechanical issues, acute injuries, postoperative management and neuromuscular issues influencing the foot.

Patients will visit Orthotics Plus for a functional assessment, a discussion of lifestyle and health factors (i.e. how their foot condition affects work/study, leisure, social life, activity levels and general daily living).

After the initial appointment, we will devise an individualised strategy for our patient and support them holistically. We’ll help you put your best foot forward!

Assessment of the Foot

The foot is a very complex structure, with 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 ligaments intricately bound together. The foot is subject to prolonged weight-bearing, genetic factors, chronic conditions and an individual’s circumstances.

While remarkable, the interdependent nature of the foot can lead to many problems, such as ligament tears, joint degradation and fractures, all necessitating healthcare intervention. Most excitingly, orthotists are well-placed to assist!

Our treatments of the foot always start with a comprehensive assessment. This involves reviewing medical history, the person’s current pathology, physical and subjective testing and understanding the person’s goals of engaging Orthotics Plus.

Foot FAQ

Yes.

At Orthotics Plus, we use a mixture of evidence-based practice and clinical experience.

We endeavour to base our treatments of evidence where possible, and let the evidence guide what we do. For example, the evidence of Orthoses for the treatment of Plantar Fasciitis is well documented [1].

At times, there can be a paucity of evidence, and if that’s the case, we’ll use our clinical judgement and experience.

Yes, in our experience, we believe the natural shape of our feet can be correlative to acquiring certain physical foot conditions.

For example, someone with naturally flat feet can be predisposed to develop specific conditions like Achilles tendinopathy or lateral ankle impingement.

People with bunions are more likely to develop second/third metatarsal head pain and stress fractures.

Yes, in most cases, we can assist with your diagnosis.

In other cases, we may not be able to provide a diagnosis due to the complexity of your condition. An example of this could be a patient requiring a bone density scan to detect the presence of osteoporosis.

As such, we may refer you to a GP, orthopedic surgeon or other medical professional for diagnosis so we can treat you accordingly.

It is important to note, our Orthotists prescribe more than just Foot Orthotics. After visiting us for an assessment, we will provide recommendations to Orthoses that may be beneficial for you.

Our assessment should indicate that:

  • The Orthoses are clinically reasonable and necessary
  • Our solutions are a viable, long term option for you
  • Alternative and/or lower cost options have been considered
  • Satisfactory reasons as to why other options are unsuitable
  • Costs
